Asher Ballonoff- day 2 at Chipangali/ Carnivores

ree

We are going into our second day of the Chipengali orphanage volunteer. We are on carnivores today so we will be taking care of the lions, leopards, hyenas, and all the other carnivores. We went to the carnivore area to find our person to tell us what to do. His name was Washington. He said that we will be tiding up the new cages for the leopard and the hyenas that are in tiny cages right now, so it is time to move them. For most of the day we tidied up the three cages. I was feeling sad for the hyenas for being in a cage and even working on our break hours. We broke

up branches and took them out of the cage. We broomed and shoveled endlessly into wheelbarrows and brought them to the compost. After endless buckets and wheelbarrows lapping around and people dragging big sticks to the boiler, the cages looked amazing. Sadly, the hyenas could not be moved because the weather was too cold. The anesthetic knocks out their temperature control so they would be too cold. I was asking all day if we could move them. Always NO because of the weather. Before carnivores, I was always thinking that carnivore day was not going to be just cleaning cages. I thought that we would be doing all this dangerous stuff and feeding the lions. When I heard that we were just doing cages, I was kind of disappointed because I thought we were going to do other stuff. Although, I learned that we were helping to get two hyenas and a leopard out of a tiny little cage into a nice and shiny cage. This was what drives me to work my tail off, and work after hours, and work on our off hours. Chipengali Animal Orphanage is by far the best place I have been in my life…
