4/16/22 Asher Ballonoff evening Lang Tang Village, back at Sunrise Hotel
Today is moving day! We are to Langtang village to take a break until our next big day to go to Riverside or maybe Lama Hotel. We packed our stuff with the gorgeous view outside our window. This morning my dad and I couldn’t sleep so, we went on a walk to see the “yakeys”. We headed down the concrete stairs and headed out the wood framed door into the cold morning air. Mountains in our peripheral vision and in the front. We went to the round trail to the yaks. Yaks on the mountain, below, and on the field in front of us. Tons of yaks just eating and eating and eating.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoa! What was that? A dog? Two little faces pop up behind the dirt. Baby yaks! So CUTE! They ran around like dogs! We watched them for a while. Videoing, photographing, and just observing the beautiful wildlife. On one video we were standing a little too close to the momma yak with the big horns… She gave 3 warnings. On the third warning, we got the message and left. We checked out the tiny weather station and the horses. We made our way back by 7:30 am.
We woke up Linden and Mom. Both sound asleep. They both woke up all bright and bushy tailed. I asked for the phone to get the wi-fi to call my friend Bennett. After a bit of fidgeting, we got the wi-fi to work. I called and he told me the school deal and I told him about the mountains and town. After that call we all had a delicious breakfast of homemade toast, eggs, and potatoes. Then we packed the last of our stuff to leave Kanjin Gumpa. The home of the mountains and yaks.
We said our goodbyes to this beautiful town and started our hike down to the Langtang village. Linden and I started our drag racing down the mountain, talking about nonsense and ideas. I see a familiar sight! The power generator at the top of the hill above Langtang. The beautiful and colorful village. Linden and I went down to the sunrise hotel.
As I walked through those old doors, memories, like a title wave, hit me hard from the last time I was in Lang Tang on 4/10-11. Me vomiting and having diarrhea like a sponge being squeezed by a giant hand. Not eating anything. And having the worst night ever. I quickly shook them away and continued. We waited for the others to show us the room.
Luckily, we got a room with an attached bathroom this time. We checked into that room and got organized. We agreed to go the bakery to get something. We got lunch first while having a talk with our parents about the importance of our world travel. We also had tons of pop quizzes about Nepal and the earthquake here in 2015 from our parents. After about 2 hours of delaying and pop quizzing, we finally got the okay to go to the bakery!
We all got a delicious pastry (chocolate cake and apple pie) and started talking to two Israeli girls. They told us of the rules of Israel and that every citizen in Israel must do 2-3 years in the army. They said it was the worst thing they have ever done. They were very nice. We also talked to a Bangladeshi that told us that Bangladesh has a very mean prime minister that hacks onto people’s phones and if they are talking bad about her, she will make them work for her. It is weird that some countries have very unfair rules.
After that, we went down to the temple and to see more yaks. After that, my dad and I went to the only house that survived the earthquake. The house was saved because it was under an overhang that spared it from falling rocks. We noticed that there could be a pool on a steep hill, so we decided to go up. It was a very slippery hill. When we got up there, we admired the amazing waterfall and rocks. Eventually Pemba scurried up the steep part in flip flops! He’s a mountain goat! We took some amazing photos and started to head down the steep hill. On the way down I slipped and hit my hand on a rock and it bled a little bit. Then I twisted my ankle on a rock. I got to the hotel and is now eating dinner. I love this place!

We miss you, Asher! What a beautiful writer you are! Maeve would love to be there with you.
What an adventure Asher!!!! And way to be a trooper and endure thru all the yucky (not yakey) stuff!
Yaks!!!!
Nicely written travelogue.
Ash - What a delightful journal—you‘re a wonderful story-teller. Also love your appreciation of nature, people & animals. Glad you’re feeling better—sounds like you were yucky miserable. How does yak milk taste? Is your sister drinking yak milk like she drinks cow’s milk at home? Love you!
Asher your writing skills are developing beautifully by the day! I feel like I am experiencing the journey with you!! Luna just told me she wants to run with the yaks! 😉
